Remnant Layers (2023–ongoing) is a series of experimental audio documentaries. The first version was exhibited at Zenpukuji Park in Tokyo in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The second was exhibited as part of the Kameyama Triennale in 2024. For both, we interviewed locals about how their sonic surroundings have changed, and which sounds and ambiences have been most significant in their lives.
In 2025 the work was presented as part of DIG Shibuya across three locations in central Shibuya. For this version, we spoke with DJs, club promoters, and others with an intimate relationship with the city — asking how its soundscape has shifted, and what they hope for its future.
This series continues my interest in how memories — especially those tied to places and objects — are created and stored. I am particularly drawn to our sonic surroundings: something rarely noticed until it has already changed, and rarely documented before it is gone.
