ARTIST STATEMENT
My artistic practice combines deeply personal topics with larger political and societal questions. A Feast With King Midas egan during a period of intense fear of death, but came to also address human hubris, food waste, and the overconsumption of natural resources. Ex Nihilo continued this conversation about the fragility of life, adding to it the desire of many to transcend death through technology. Embrace ooks at death through what we leave behind — memories, marks, objects, and traces.
Solace investigates sorrow and letting go through looking closely at the faces and emotions of crying strangers. Fukushima - The Home That Once Was explores memory and its fragility through the stories of people who once lived inside the exclusion zone of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster.
I am currently finishing the photo series and book Everybody That I Love Will Die, hich captures the fragility of life, love, and friendship through more than 25 years of documenting the lives of a group of friends. It is a continuation of Our Memories are Tomorrow, a computer installation, which slowly destroyed a large database of pictures taken of my life.
I am also in the final stages of Search and Destroy, a series of photos and videos exploring how algorithms see our world. In early 2027, an experimental short film, Tokyo Fumin, about Tokyo's architecture and its relationship with the body will be released.
We are also developing Mosaics, an experimental documentary that uses algorithmic recommendation to create a unique film for each viewer, based on their unconscious hopes and needs. It is scheduled for release in late 2027.
Two further films are in early pre-production. Places of Distant Nature is a multi-channel documentary about various — typical and untypical — forms of love, with an estimated release in 2029. The Obituary Machine is an experimental documentary in which people compose a eulogy for a loved one who is still alive, with an estimated release in mid-2027. An as yet unnamed two-channel documentary exploring how language and culture shape personality is also in early development, with a first demo already filmed.
In the recent years I have been drawn to the audio format. Remnant Layers and The Common Table are both documentary-based audio works rooted in memory, while also addressing gentrification, nostalgia, and how traditions evolve in the contemporary world.
More overtly political works — Nemesis, Race Code and Collateral — create unsettling spaces where fear, oppression, and the possibility of death can be actively felt. Other works, such as Null Statue, and the contemporary dance films Unfit and Event engage with the world through form, movement, body and the abstract.
My aim is to create work that looks at the world not only through personal experience, but across the registers of politics, society, customs, and memory. As an artist, I am drawn to working across different platforms and formats, and in many works I have been interested in pushing technical boundaries — as with the virtual reality documentaries.
